Immigration Policy Lacks Heart
Immigration policy under a National Government has become heartless and devoid of cultural awareness. The Family Re-unification Policy has been dismantled over the past five years on questionable grounds. There are numerous other instances where a lack of compassion is apparent. The immigration service must know of the requirement on Chinese young people to provide care and support for their elderly and the significance of a one child policy which places this duty on one person. From 2012 adult children were denied entry into NZ under the reunification policy.
The Immigration Minister, Michael Woodhouse, when questioned and in reply stated “ The Sibling and Adult Child Category closed in May 2012 and the Government has no intention of reopening it. Only two thirds of sponsored siblings and adult children interviewed 18 months after gaining residency had jobs, despite a job offer for ongoing and sustainable employment being a key requirement of this policy”. (18 March 2014)
I would have thought that two thirds being employed was a considerable achievement when one considers the language barriers and inability to have foreign qualifications recognised. There have to be other mechanisms available to deny permanent residency until criteria such as employment are met, and there is no cost to Work and Income or the Health system without residency.
I understand that family reunification is now being denied for the parents of their resident children.I would suggest that it won’t be only the lack of houses and growing inequality that affect the ballot box in September. A sizeable Chinese constituency should not be discounted.
